Schema & Structured Data

An AI system generating an answer isn't reading your page the way a person does. It's looking for a passage it can lift, attribute, and drop into a response without needing the surrounding context.

That reframes structure from a formatting preference into a visibility issue.

Lead Every Section With Its Answer

Put a direct, self-contained answer of roughly 40 to 60 words at the top of each major section, then expand underneath. The answer should make sense read in isolation, with no dependency on the paragraph before it.

This matters because of where citations come from: around 44 percent of ChatGPT citations originate in the first 30 percent of a page's text, per Kevin Indig's analysis. Content that builds to a conclusion at the bottom is structurally disadvantaged.

Write Headings as Questions

People phrase queries as questions. Headings phrased the same way match more cleanly.

"Pricing" is a heading. "How much does carpet cleaning cost in Metro Detroit?" is a heading that matches a query. The second one costs nothing extra and does considerably more work.

Use Tables for Anything Comparative

Tables get extracted more reliably than the same information written as prose. Pricing ranges, feature comparisons, timelines, before-and-after figures — if the content is inherently tabular, make it a table.

This is one of the cheapest improvements available. The information is usually already there, just formatted as sentences.

Include Specifics Worth Citing

Statistics increased AI visibility by roughly 22 percent and quotations by about 37 percent, per the 2025 AI Visibility Report.

Vague claims give an AI nothing to attribute. Specific figures, dates, ranges, and named sources give it exactly what it's looking for. If you have real numbers — your own pricing ranges, timelines, project counts — use them.

Add Schema That Reflects the Visible Page

FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Organization, and Author/Person schema all measurably help. The condition: markup must describe content actually visible on the page. Schema describing hidden or implied content works against you.

For local businesses, LocalBusiness schema with accurate hours, service area, and contact details is foundational — that's the machine-readable version of the information AI tools need to recommend you at all.

Keep Pages Updated

For commercial queries, AirOps found 83 percent of AI citations came from pages updated within twelve months, with more than 60 percent updated within six.

A practical implication for small businesses: a smaller set of maintained pages outperforms a large archive of stale ones. Reviewing and refreshing your most important pages quarterly is more valuable than publishing more.

A Caution About Confidence

Cited passages are nearly twice as likely to use direct, unhedged language — which is true, and easy to over-apply. The right response is to state clearly what you actually know, not to delete every qualifier. Content that sounds certain about things it shouldn't be is worse than content nobody cites.

Questions People Ask

How long should an answer be for AI to use it?
Roughly 40 to 60 words for a direct answer block — long enough to be complete, short enough to drop into a generated response without editing. Expand below it for human readers.

Do tables really help with AI search?
Yes. Tables get extracted more reliably than the same information written in paragraphs, because the relationships between values are explicit rather than implied.

What schema types matter most for AI visibility?
FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Organization, and Author/Person have the most reported impact. Local businesses should also implement LocalBusiness schema with accurate hours, service area, and contact information.

Should I add an FAQ section to every page?
Where real questions exist, yes — question-shaped headings match query phrasing and are easy to extract. Manufactured FAQs padding a page with questions nobody asks add little and can read as filler.

How often should I update my content?
Quarterly review of your most important pages is a reasonable baseline, since freshness signals weigh heavily in commercial-query citations. Maintaining fewer pages well beats publishing more and letting them age.
