Right now you can find agencies selling AI search optimization for $1,500 to $4,000 a month, alongside claims that 98.8 percent of local businesses are invisible to AI and that you're already losing customers you'll never know about.
Some of that is defensible. Some of it is a sales pitch. Here's the version with the inconvenient numbers included.
Cloudflare Radar measured search referral traffic across May 2026. Google sent 87.63 percent of it. Every AI chatbot combined — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity — sent 0.29 percent.
That's about one-fifth of what DuckDuckGo sent on its own. Ahrefs' June 2026 data shows the same order of magnitude, with AI assistants at roughly 0.3 percent of tracked referrals and ChatGPT declining month over month.
If someone is telling you that AI search is where your customers are today, that's the number they're not showing you.
Usage is enormous even where referrals aren't. Hundreds of millions of people use these tools. Many get an answer and never click anything — influence that doesn't appear in referral data but shapes decisions anyway.
Local AI usage is growing quickly. One 2026 analysis found consumer AI use for local business searches rising from roughly 6 percent to 45 percent in a year.
The traffic converts unusually well. Multiple analyses put AI-referred conversion rates several times above organic search — around 14 percent versus under 3 percent in some, roughly 4x in others.
Growth is steep. Triple-digit year-over-year increases show up consistently, even from a small base.
And the platforms are shuffling. ChatGPT's share of AI referrals dropped from roughly 90 percent to about 63 percent between 2025 and early 2026, with Claude and Gemini absorbing much of the difference. Perplexity fell sharply from its 2025 peak. Anyone selling you a ChatGPT-specific strategy is optimizing for a target that moved twice in two years.
AI search is a real emerging channel with excellent conversion quality and small absolute volume that is growing fast.
That combination argues for neither panic nor dismissal. It argues for doing the work that pays off in both channels and skipping the work that only pays off in the smaller one.
All of this is worth doing regardless of what happens with AI, which is exactly why it's the right list:
Dedicated AI visibility tracking tools, platform-specific optimization campaigns, and premium retainers sold specifically as AI search services. Not because they're worthless — because at current referral volumes, the return is hard to justify for a small business until the fundamentals above are genuinely handled.
Guaranteed placement in AI answers. There's no mechanism for it. Any service promising it is either misinformed or dishonest.
Also be skeptical of anyone who won't tell you what share of your traffic currently comes from AI. It's measurable. If they're selling urgency without showing you your own number, that's the tell.
If your Google Business Profile is incomplete, your reviews are thin, and your website is slow, AI search optimization is the wrong thing to buy. Fix the foundation — it's what AI systems evaluate anyway.
If the foundation is solid and you want to get ahead of a channel that's growing fast, structuring your content for extraction is inexpensive and sensible. Just go in understanding that you're investing in where things are heading, not where the traffic is today.
Is AI search worth optimizing for as a small business?
It's worth doing the work that serves both AI and traditional search — accurate listings, real reviews, well-structured content. Dedicated AI-only campaigns are harder to justify while AI referrals remain around 0.3 percent of search traffic.
How much of my traffic comes from AI search?
Most businesses see between 0.1 and 2.8 percent, varying by industry. Check your analytics for referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini before buying anything based on someone else's numbers.
Should I pay for AI search optimization services?
Only after the fundamentals are handled. If your Google Business Profile is incomplete or your review count is low, that work delivers far more return and improves AI visibility as a side effect.
Will AI replace Google search?
It hasn't so far. Google sent roughly 88 percent of search referrals in May 2026 and its share was still rising slightly month over month. AI is adding a channel rather than replacing one, at least at present.
What's the single highest-value thing I can do for AI visibility?
For a local business, maintain an accurate Google Business Profile and a steady stream of recent reviews. Both are weighted heavily by AI systems and both drive traditional local search regardless.
All statistics current as of July 2026. This is a fast-moving area — figures should be re-verified periodically.
