SEO

If you've spent any time reading about AI and search recently, you've encountered at least four acronyms for what sounds like the same thing: GEO, AEO, LLMO, AI SEO. Most articles use them interchangeably. A few insist the distinctions are critical.

Here's the honest version.

The Distinction That Exists

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the broad discipline: everything involved in making a brand visible and favorably represented across generative AI platforms.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a component of GEO focused specifically on the retrieval layer — ensuring your content is the thing selected when an AI needs a source for a particular fact, definition, or recommendation.

So AEO sits inside GEO. GEO also covers concerns AEO doesn't: how your brand is described when no citation is involved, entity consistency across the web, presence on the third-party sources AI systems draw from, and whether the model's underlying training data represents you accurately.

Why the Distinction Mostly Doesn't Matter Yet

For a small or mid-sized business, the practical work is nearly identical either way: structure content so it can be extracted, publish genuinely useful answers to real questions, keep business information consistent everywhere it appears, and build the kind of third-party presence that signals legitimacy.

Anyone selling you a GEO package that is meaningfully different from a competent AEO package is probably selling you vocabulary.

The distinction becomes real at scale, where brand representation across models — not just citation of individual pages — becomes a measurable business concern.

The Part That's Genuinely Different From SEO

One area where GEO diverges sharply from traditional SEO is off-site signals.

Research from SE Ranking found that domains with substantial brand presence on Reddit and Quora had roughly four times the likelihood of being cited, and that businesses with profiles on review platforms like Trustpilot, G2, and Yelp were about three times more likely to be selected as a source by ChatGPT. Ahrefs has found Reddit among the most-cited domains across ChatGPT, AI Mode, and AI Overviews.

That's a meaningful strategic difference. Traditional SEO rewards what happens on your site. Generative systems weight what the rest of the internet says about you — which is harder to manufacture and, for a business with real customers, easier to earn.

Questions People Ask

What does GEO stand for in marketing?
Generative engine optimization — optimizing content and brand presence for visibility inside AI-generated responses. Note that "GEO" also commonly means geographic targeting, so context matters.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
GEO is the broader discipline covering all optimization for generative AI platforms. AEO is the subset focused on being selected and cited as a source for specific answers. In day-to-day practice for most businesses, the work overlaps almost entirely.

Is GEO just a rebrand of SEO?
Partly. The fundamentals — useful content, technical health, real authority — carry over directly, and Google's May 2026 guidance says as much for its own AI features. What's genuinely new is the emphasis on extractable structure and on third-party mentions across forums and review platforms.

Do I need to hire a GEO specialist?
Most small businesses don't. The highest-value work — accurate listings, consistent business information, real reviews, clearly structured content answering real questions — is the same work a competent local marketing program already does.
