This is one of the most frustrating situations I see small business owners in: they've invested in Google Ads, they're spending money every month, and the leads just aren't coming. They start to wonder if Google Ads is a scam, or if they're doing something fundamentally wrong. Usually, the problem isn't Google. It's one of a handful of fixable issues.
There's a big difference between someone searching "what is carpet cleaning" and someone searching "carpet cleaning service near me." The first is informational — they're learning. The second is transactional — they're ready to buy. If you're spending money on informational keywords when your goal is phone calls and bookings, you're paying for traffic that was never going to convert. The fix: audit your keyword list, focus on high-intent local search terms, and use negative keywords aggressively.
Getting someone to click your ad is only half the battle. A lot of businesses run Google Ads that point to their homepage — which has to do too many things at once. When someone clicks an ad for "emergency HVAC repair" and lands on a generic homepage, they leave. The fix: create dedicated landing pages for your key services that match the search intent and have a single, clear call to action.
If your ad copy is generic — "Quality Service. Affordable Prices. Call Today." — it's not giving anyone a reason to click yours over the others. Good ad copy speaks directly to what the customer wants, addresses a specific concern, and gives them a clear reason to choose you.
If you don't have conversion tracking set up, you're flying blind. You don't know which keywords are generating leads, which ads are performing, or where your budget is actually going. This is one of the first things I set up for every client.
Google Ads is not a set-it-and-forget-it system. Regular monitoring — reviewing search term reports, adjusting bids, testing new ad copy, adding negative keywords — is what separates campaigns that work from ones that drain budgets.
