The difference between a paid ad strategy that works and one that doesn't usually comes down to one thing: understanding what you're actually buying. And a lot of small business owners — and unfortunately, a lot of the agencies selling to them — are fuzzy on that.
What paid advertising cannot do: fix a bad website, substitute for a clear brand message, or generate sustainable business without a real value proposition. Ads put people in front of your business. Your brand and your product close the deal.
Google Search Ads connect you with people actively looking for what you offer right now. High-intent traffic — people who already know they want what you sell.
Meta Ads reach people who aren't necessarily searching for you, but fit your target audience profile. Great for building awareness, reaching local markets, and remarketing.
Google Local Services Ads appear above regular search results with a "Google Guaranteed" badge. You only pay when a customer contacts you directly through the ad. Powerful for local service businesses and often underutilized.
I'll say this plainly: charging a percentage commission on your ad spend is, in my opinion, an unethical pricing model for most small business engagements. Some agencies charge 20–30% of your total ad spend as their management fee. Their revenue grows when your ad spend grows — not when your business grows. That's a structural conflict of interest.
My approach: your ad spend is your ad spend. I charge a flat monthly retainer for setup, management, monitoring, and reporting. Transparency is non-negotiable.
Starting small — $500 to $1,000 a month — and scaling based on results is smarter than going all-in before you know what works. More important than the dollar amount: are you measuring the right things? Track calls, form submissions, website visits, and any direct revenue you can attribute to the campaign.

This question usually gets asked because someone got burned. The number of rounds matters less than what counts as a round — and why "unlimited revisions" is a warning sign rather than a perk.
