There's No Universal Answer — But There Is a Framework

Anyone who gives you a definitive Google Ads budget without knowing your industry, your market, your goals, and your margins is guessing. But there is a framework for thinking about it — and some honest context about what different budget levels can realistically achieve.

Start With the Cost of a Click in Your Market

Google Ads operates on an auction system. The cost per click you pay depends on how many other businesses are bidding on the same keywords in your area. Highly competitive industries — home services, legal, healthcare, real estate — have higher CPCs. Research what clicks typically cost in your space using Google's Keyword Planner before setting a budget.

Work Backward From Your Goal

What is the average value of a new customer? What percentage of leads typically convert? How many leads do you need per month? From there, estimate how many clicks you need, multiply by your average CPC, and you have a budget grounded in business math rather than guesswork.

What Different Budget Levels Can Achieve

$300–$500/month: A testing budget. You'll get some data and maybe a handful of leads, but not enough volume to optimize effectively.

$500–$1,500/month: For many local service businesses, this is where Google Ads starts to become a meaningful lead source with proper setup and management.

$1,500–$5,000/month: This is where you start to see real scale and can dominate your local market in most industries.

The Ethics of Ad Management Fees

Be cautious of agencies that charge a percentage of your ad spend as their management fee. Some charge 20–30% of whatever you spend — giving them a financial incentive to increase your budget, not necessarily to improve your results. A flat management fee is cleaner and more ethical. Your ad budget goes entirely toward reaching customers. That's how I structure it.
