I Like Canva. But...

Let me be clear upfront: I like Canva. It's a genuinely useful tool, and I don't believe every small business needs to outsource every piece of creative work they ever produce. But "I'll just use Canva" is one of the most expensive decisions a small business owner can make — when it becomes a substitute for actual brand strategy, and when the person using it doesn't have the foundation to use it correctly.

The Problem Isn't Canva. It's the Blank Slate.

Canva gives you access to thousands of templates. What it doesn't give you is brand clarity. If you don't know your colors, your fonts, your tone, and your positioning before you open Canva — every template you pick is a gamble. And most of the time, the gamble results in content that looks like it belongs to a different business every week. Inconsistency is invisible to the person creating it. It's very visible to customers. And it quietly erodes the trust that brand recognition is supposed to build.

The Canva Brand Kit Is a Game-Changer — If You Use It

Canva has a brand kit feature that lets you lock in your exact colors (HEX codes), your fonts, and your logo. Once it's set up, every template you use starts from a consistent foundation. The problem: most small business owners never set it up. If you're using Canva right now, stop and set up your brand kit today. It will immediately improve the consistency of everything you produce.

When Canva Isn't Enough

There comes a point in every growing business where the tools that got you here won't get you to the next level. The signals are clear: your brand looks different everywhere, you're spending hours a week on design that still looks amateur, or you're competing for clients who expect a level of polish that Canva templates simply can't deliver.

Canva is a great tool. It works best when you have a brand to work from. Build the brand first. Then use Canva all you want.
