I want to be upfront: I'm a genuine advocate for DIY design tools. They've opened up access to professional-looking creative work for millions of small business owners who couldn't afford to outsource everything. That's a good thing. A real good thing.
But — and this is a significant but — these tools are only as good as the person using them. When that person doesn't have the time, training, or strategic framework to use them correctly, these tools don't just fail to help. They actively hurt the brand.
Canva has a brand kit feature that lets you lock in your colors, fonts, and logos. Most small business owners never set it up. So they pick a different shade of blue every time, use three different fonts across their posts, and end up with a social feed that looks like five different businesses. Inconsistency is the enemy of trust.
Canva's templates are being used by thousands of other businesses in your industry. When you don't adapt them to your actual brand, you look like everyone else. Generic is the opposite of memorable.
Most self-built websites suffer from the same issues: poor mobile optimization, slow load times, weak copywriting, no real SEO strategy, and a layout that prioritizes aesthetics over conversion. A website that doesn't convert visitors into customers isn't a marketing tool — it's an expensive business card that nobody reads.
DIY design tools are a lot like AI. They're incredibly powerful. They can dramatically improve your workflow. But they're a tool, not a strategy. AI is fantastic for enhancing what you're already doing. Canva is fantastic for executing a brand you've already built.
Focus on what you do best. The creative work — the design, the copywriting, the web strategy — that's what I'm passionate about. Let people who are passionate about their craft handle the things that fall outside yours.
