One of the most common questions I get from small business owners is: "What do I actually need?" Not what sounds good on a proposal — what does my specific business actually need to look professional, compete locally, and connect with the right customers?
It's a great question. And the honest answer is: it depends. But let me break down what's typically included in a brand design package, what's actually essential, and what you might be able to hold off on.
When most people hear "brand design," they think logo. A logo is part of it. But a real brand design package is the full visual system that tells the world who you are.
Your brand is not just how you look. It's how you're seen, how you're heard, and how you make people feel. Your logo is the symbol of that. Your colors communicate your personality. Your typography sets a tone. All of it works together, or none of it works the way it should.
Not just one logo — a system. Primary logo, secondary or stacked version, icon or monogram, and sometimes a wordmark. Your logo needs to work on a hat, a business card, a website header, and a social media profile picture.
Primary and secondary options with exact color codes for digital (HEX, RGB) and print (CMYK, Pantone). If your designer hands you a logo without color codes, you're not getting a complete package.
Your heading font, secondary typeface, and guidelines on how to use them together. Your fonts are part of your brand voice.
The rulebook. It tells anyone who touches your brand exactly how to use your visual assets correctly. Without brand guidelines, your brand will drift over time — and inconsistency is one of the biggest killers of brand trust.
Business cards, letterhead, email signatures. Your first physical impression.
Branded templates for posts, stories, and cover images. This is what makes your social presence look cohesive rather than like you're making it up as you go.
Not every business needs the full package on day one. If you're a brand-new startup with a tight budget, start with the essentials: a logo system, a defined color palette, and a typography selection. Build from there.
The question I always ask first: What's working, and what's hurting you? Start there.
