Bad Design Outcomes Are Almost Never Entirely the Designer's Fault

That's a bold thing to say, I know. But after more than a decade in this business, I've seen the same patterns play out over and over. The breakdown starts at the very beginning — before a single pixel was placed. The good news: this is almost entirely preventable.

Start With Clarity, Not a Search

Before you hire anyone, you need to get clear on what you're actually trying to accomplish. Most businesses jump straight to "I need a logo" without asking the more important question: What am I trying to communicate, and to whom?

Your designer can't read your mind. The more clearly you can articulate your goals, your audience, your competition, and your brand personality, the better results you're going to get. Great designers ask great questions. If someone is ready to start on your logo before asking anything about your business, that's your first red flag.

Where to Actually Look

  • Referrals from other business owners. Hands down the most reliable source.
  • Local creative agencies and boutique studios. Working with someone local means easier communication and a relationship that can grow over time.
  • Professional portfolios on Behance or LinkedIn. Higher signal-to-noise ratio than most marketplaces.
  • Freelance marketplaces (Fiverr, Upwork). Can work for well-defined, lower-stakes projects. Be cautious with brand identity work.

How to Evaluate a Portfolio

  • Range and relevance. Have they worked with businesses similar to yours?
  • Consistency of quality. One great piece in a portfolio full of average work tells you they got lucky once.
  • Strategic thinking. Can they explain why they made the design choices they made?
  • Versatility across formats. Does their work hold up across print, digital, social media, signage?

The Questions You Should Ask Before You Hire

  • What does your process look like from kickoff to final delivery?
  • How do you handle revisions? How many are included?
  • Do you use a contract?
  • What file formats will I receive, and do I have full ownership?
  • Can you show me examples from businesses in my industry?

Red Flags to Watch For

  • They won't show you a portfolio or references.
  • They jump to a price before understanding the scope.
  • They promise unlimited revisions for a very low price.
  • Their communication is slow or inconsistent during the vetting process.
  • They can't explain their work.

The Relationship Is the Product

Your relationship with your designer is as important as their skill level. The best design outcomes come from relationships built on clear communication, mutual respect, and shared investment in the outcome. Find someone you can talk to honestly — someone who will push back when you're wrong, take feedback without getting defensive, and care about your business the way you do.
