Getting Started

Marketing Is a Lot. Let's Cut Through It.

If you've been reading through these posts — the branding conversations, the website questions, the social media debates, the paid advertising decisions — you might be feeling one of two things: energized, or overwhelmed. Both are understandable.

So let me give you a clear, practical starting point. A checklist of the foundational elements every small business needs to have in place before they invest in anything else.

Step 1: Get Your Brand Foundation Right

Before you spend a dollar on advertising, before you launch a social media push, before you redesign your website — make sure you have a clear brand foundation:

  • A professional logo that works across all formats.
  • A defined color palette with exact color codes for digital and print.
  • A consistent typography system.
  • A clear brand voice. How do you sound? Friendly? Expert? Direct? Define it.
  • A simple, clear message: What do you do, who do you do it for, and why should they choose you?

Step 2: Build or Fix Your Website

Your website is your most important marketing asset. Ask: if someone lands on my website right now, will they understand what I offer, trust me, and know exactly what to do next? Make sure it's mobile-optimized, fast, clear, credible, and findable.

Step 3: Claim and Optimize Your Google Business Profile

If you're a local service business and you haven't claimed your Google Business Profile, do it right now. It's free and one of the highest-ROI things you can do for local visibility. Fill it out completely and start asking every satisfied customer to leave a review.

Scotty at Rapid Dry Carpet Cleaning set a goal of crossing 100 Google reviews and now holds a perfect 5.0 rating with more than 110. His search ranking climbed. Customers told him directly: "If it wasn't for your reviews, I never would have found you." That's the power of a well-managed Google presence.

Step 4: Show Up on Social Media Consistently

Pick one or two platforms where your customers actually are. Show up consistently with content that's genuinely useful, interesting, or authentic. An inconsistent social media presence is often worse than no presence at all.

Step 5: Generate Reviews

Reviews are trust in written form. Build a simple review-generation habit: at the close of every job, ask your customer how it went. If the answer is positive, ask if they'd be willing to share that on Google. Follow up with a simple, non-pushy message. It works because it's genuine.

Step 6: Track What's Working

Set up Google Analytics. Monitor your Google Business insights. Track where your inquiries are coming from. You don't need a sophisticated setup — you just need to pay attention.

Step 7: Know When to Get Help

You started your business because you're exceptional at something. That expertise is the reason customers hire you. The creative and marketing work — the brand design, the website, the social media, the paid advertising — that's a different area of expertise. Trying to do all of it yourself is one of the most common reasons small businesses plateau.

Focus on what you do best. Let the right partners handle the rest.

A Final Word on Small Business

I got into this work because I believe in small business. The carpet cleaner who shows up on time and does excellent work deserves to be found. The restaurant owner who puts everything into their food deserves a full dining room. The contractor who takes pride in their craft deserves to compete against the big franchises and win.

Small business is the closest you can get to the heart of any community. These businesses deserve great marketing. They deserve to be seen. And that's exactly why I do this work.
