Small Business Strategy

You've Tried It All.

You've tried social media. You've run ads. You've rebuilt the website. You've posted consistently for three months, then inconsistently for six, then stopped. You've hired freelancers. You've done it yourself. And nothing seems to stick. First: I believe you. And I also want to tell you that what you're describing is almost always a symptom, not the problem itself.

The Problem Underneath the Problem

When businesses try everything and nothing works, the cause is almost always one of the same three things.

A positioning problem. Your marketing might be technically competent, but it's not connecting because it's not saying anything specific to anyone in particular. Marketing that tries to speak to everyone speaks to no one. If you can't clearly articulate why someone should choose you over every other available option, your customers can't figure it out either.

A foundation problem. The marketing is fine, but the thing it's sending people to — the website, the first impression, the brand experience — isn't converting. Traffic without conversion is just expensive noise.

A consistency problem. Not the kind where you know you should be posting more. The deeper kind, where your business looks and sounds different in every place it shows up, so nothing accumulates into recognition.

The Thing Nobody Tells You

Marketing doesn't work because you're doing enough of it. It works because the right thing is connecting with the right people in the right way. Volume is not the answer. Clarity is. The businesses I've watched make dramatic turns almost always made one big change: they got clear on what they were offering, who it was for, and why it was different. Everything else became easier after that.

Stop adding tactics. Start subtracting confusion. Pick one thing you do better than anyone else, for one specific type of customer, and make absolutely everything you do point at that. You don't need a bigger marketing budget. You need a clearer message.
