End-of-year letters usually round up to something tidy. I'd rather just tell you what actually happened.

Here's the real one: early this year I built out a whole AI system I was sure would move the needle — ElevenLabs voice tools wired through Twilio for cold calling, plus a chatbot live on my own website. Everything was set up correctly. I genuinely thought this was going to change how I brought in work. It didn't do a damn thing. Calls got rejected or never returned. Nobody engaged with the chatbot, not once. So I killed it and pulled the subscription. Maybe I bring some version of it back if I ever find an actual use case for it — but for now it's just proof that "correctly built" and "worth building" aren't the same question. It's part of why AI agents live in my service guide now as a capability I can bring into a project, not a standalone thing I sell.

Two relationships ended this year, and I want to say plainly that neither one was a failure — they were just business. Milan Dragway sold in 2025 and our engagement ended with the sale; the event calendar I rebuilt so their team could update it themselves is still running today under the new ownership, which is its own kind of compliment. Vacation Innovations, my first real year-long client relationship, wound down the year before and never picked back up — I still check in occasionally, and the door's never closed on either one. Budgets change. People move on. I'd work with both again without hesitation. → Client Spotlight: Milan Dragway

If you want a takeaway you can use before the year ends: go look at what you're actually paying for right now — every subscription, every tool — and ask honestly whether it's earned its place or just because you set it up once and forgot about it. I found mine in a call-and-chat system that never rang. You've probably got your own version sitting somewhere in your bank statement.

Here's the harder admission. Some of my longest relationships — clients who've stuck with me four-plus years — are still on pricing I set back when I was newer at this, still learning the software, still figuring out what my time was actually worth. If I quoted those same projects today, at what I now know they're worth, I probably wouldn't have kept some of those clients. That's the real cost of learning in public. I don't regret it — everyone starts somewhere, and being underpriced while green is a different thing than being careless — but I've since started using better tools to actually review my own source material and build real estimates instead of guessing, because both sides deserve a fair number. You're coming to me for a service the same way you'd go to someone else for work on your car. Fair's fair.

What worked better than I expected: showing up. The Anchor Bay Chamber, Men in Business, and this year, sitting on the New Baltimore Arts and Culture Commission — none of it was a growth tactic when I started doing it, but the reputation it's built has compounded harder this year than any single campaign could have. That's not a strategy I can hand you in a template. It's just years of being in the room.

To everyone I've worked with this year — the ones who've stuck around, the ones who come and go with the seasons, and the ones I worked with once and never again — thank you. JpCS wouldn't exist without any of you, and I don't take that lightly. If you've got a minute, an honest review means more than you'd think, and so does telling the next person who needs this kind of work about us.

If you're rethinking your own brand going into a new year, that's genuinely a good time to do it. → Branding

Next month starts a new year, and here's what I'm actually looking forward to: being even more present in this community than I already am, not just in the work. More growth and opportunity, whatever shape that ends up taking. Learning things I don't know yet. Finding creative solutions to problems I haven't run into. That's not a five-point plan for 2027 — it's just the honest version of what I'm looking forward to, and I'd rather give you that than a prediction I made up to sound like I've got it all figured out.
