You ask three people to quote the same website. One says $800. One says $4,000. One says $18,000.
It's a reasonable thing to find alarming. It usually isn't a sign that anyone is trying to take advantage of you — it's a sign that all three are quoting different projects, because you asked for something that has no fixed definition.
Here's what actually creates the spread, and how to compare properly.
The word covers a three-page brochure site and a two-hundred-page platform with a booking system. Until someone defines page count, functionality, and who supplies the content, every quote is answering a different question.
This is the largest single cause of variation, and it's fixable before you ask anyone for a number.
The main reason website quotes vary widely is that "a website" has no fixed definition. Until page count, functionality, content responsibility, and post-launch support are specified, each designer is quoting a different project and the numbers aren't comparable.
Adapting an established layout to your brand and content is a fundamentally different amount of work than designing a layout from nothing.
Neither is wrong. A template-based build can be excellent, fast, and entirely appropriate for a business that needs a clear, functional site. Custom makes sense when the structure genuinely needs to be different.
But comparing a template quote against a custom quote and concluding one designer is expensive is comparing two different products.
The most commonly overlooked variable, and frequently the largest.
If a quote assumes you supply finished copy and photography, it's smaller. If it includes writing the copy and sourcing or shooting the imagery, it's larger — and it's a genuinely bigger job.
Content is also the most common reason projects stall. A cheaper quote that assumes you'll write everything can end up taking six months while you don't write everything.
Some quotes end at launch. Others include a period of support, training, updates, or ongoing maintenance.
Ask specifically: what happens when something breaks the week after launch? Who handles platform updates? Is a small text change billable?
A quote that covers six months of support and one that ends the day the site goes live are not the same purchase, even at the same price.
A solo designer, a small studio, and a large agency carry different overhead, and that overhead shows up in the number.
Bigger isn't automatically better. A large agency brings depth, process, and continuity if someone leaves. A solo designer usually brings lower cost and direct access to the person doing the work. Different trades, both legitimate.
What matters is knowing which one you're buying.
Some quotes include discovery — understanding your customers, your competitors, what the site needs to accomplish, how it should be structured.
Others start at design and build what you asked for.
The second is cheaper. It's also the reason some sites look good and don't convert. If nobody asked what the site is supposed to do, it probably won't do it.
Website quotes that include discovery and strategy cost more than quotes that start directly at design. The difference isn't padding — a site built without understanding what it needs to accomplish frequently looks fine and converts poorly.
Normalize the scope before you compare the numbers. Write down your requirements and send the identical brief to everyone:
With the same brief, the quotes become comparable. And the differences that remain tell you something real about each provider.
Very low quotes aren't automatically bad, but they're worth a few questions.
Ask what's excluded. Ask whether you'll own the domain and hosting account. Ask what a change costs after launch. Ask whether you get source files.
The common pattern isn't fraud — it's a low headline number with the expensive parts unbundled, or a site built inside the provider's account that's difficult to take with you.
Not "why is this one more expensive" but "what does this one include that the other doesn't."
Frequently the answer is content, strategy, support, or ownership. Sometimes it's overhead. Occasionally it's nothing, and that's worth knowing too.
Any of those is a reasonable basis for a decision. Price alone isn't.
Why do website quotes vary so much?
Mostly because "a website" has no fixed definition. Page count, custom versus template, who writes content, post-launch support, and whether strategy is included all move the number substantially. Different quotes are usually quoting different projects.
How do I compare website quotes fairly?
Send every designer the same written brief specifying page count, functionality, content responsibility, revisions, SEO setup, post-launch support, and ownership terms. Comparable inputs produce comparable quotes.
Is a cheaper website quote a red flag?
Not necessarily, but ask what's excluded. Common gaps are content writing, photography, post-launch support, and ownership of the domain and hosting account. A low number with the expensive parts unbundled isn't actually cheaper.
What's usually not included in a website quote?
Content writing, photography, ongoing hosting, domain registration, maintenance, and post-launch changes are the most commonly excluded items. Ask about each specifically.
Should I always choose the cheapest website quote?
Only if it genuinely includes what you need. The relevant comparison is total cost to a working website, including anything you'll have to buy separately or redo later.
Does a more expensive website perform better?
Not automatically. Price correlates with scope, strategy, and support rather than with results. A well-scoped modest site frequently outperforms an expensive one built without understanding what it needed to do.
