Before I design anything, write anything, or plan a campaign — I have the same conversation with every new client. It's not a sales conversation. It's not a project kickoff. It's something more fundamental than both.
Not in a demographic sense. I mean: who is the specific person you most want to serve, and what do you know about what they actually care about? What keeps them up at night? What have they tried before that hasn't worked? What does success look like to them? Most business owners have a general sense of this. Very few have thought about it with the specificity that makes marketing actually work.
Not what you do — that's a service list. Why you, specifically, over every other available option? This question makes a lot of business owners uncomfortable. Not because they don't have an answer, but because they've never been forced to articulate it clearly. The answer to this question is your positioning. And your positioning is the single most important thing your marketing communicates — or fails to communicate.

Not "more business" or "better visibility." Specific. Measurable. Tied to real outcomes. Because the answer to this question determines what we should actually be building — and a lot of businesses are building the wrong things because they haven't defined what winning looks like.
Without it, everything that follows is guesswork. The design choices, the messaging, the channel strategy, the ad targeting — all of it should flow from a clear understanding of who you are, who you're for, and where you're going. When it doesn't, you end up with marketing that looks fine but doesn't perform.
