There's an old line about the squeaky wheel getting the grease. In marketing it turns into something else: the loudest, cheapest, most aggressive offer gets the attention.
We don't operate that way, and I want to be straightforward about why.
You've seen the pitches. A website for a few hundred dollars. A logo by tomorrow. A full rebrand for less than a decent laptop.
Those offers are real, and they deliver something. What they deliver is cookie-cutter work — a template with your name dropped in, a stock icon paired with a font, a site built from the same layout as the last forty.
That isn't a moral failing. It's a business model. To make those prices work, you need volume, and to get volume you need speed, and to get speed you need to stop customizing. The math forces it.
The problem is that you're buying the output of that math, and the output is something that looks like everyone else.
Low-cost creative work depends on volume, and volume depends on templating. The economics require it. What you're buying at that price point isn't a discount on custom work — it's a different product.
We are not trying to build the biggest portfolio in Metro Detroit.
We're building a modest portfolio of work we'd put our name on. That's a deliberate choice and it comes with real tradeoffs — we take fewer projects, we say no more often, and we grow slower than a shop optimizing for volume.
What it buys is the ability to actually do the work. To ask questions before designing. To revise something because it isn't right yet rather than because the revision round is contractually owed.
This is the part I'd point to if you only take one thing from this.
The majority of our client base is referral-based. We don't dominate anyone's feed. We're not running the loudest campaign in the county. People work with us, and then they tell someone else.
That's a slower way to grow a business. It's also the hardest signal to fake. Anyone can buy visibility. Nobody can buy a client of six years recommending them to a friend.
Referral-driven growth is slower than advertising-driven growth, but it's the one signal that can't be purchased. A business that grows mostly by referral is being recommended by people with nothing to gain from recommending it.
I don't want to pretend otherwise: sometimes the budget option is correct.
Testing an idea before committing. A side project that may not exist in a year. A one-off flyer for a single event. Something genuinely temporary.
If that's your situation, use the cheap option and don't feel bad about it. We'll tell you that directly rather than sell you something you don't need — and we have.
The calculation changes when the work has to last.
A logo going on a building, a truck, and a trademark application. A website that has to generate leads for years. A brand that other people will produce materials from after you're not in the room.
In those cases the cheap version usually gets replaced, and replacing it costs more than doing it once. That's not a scare tactic — it's just what tends to happen when the requirement outgrows the purchase.
Don't compare prices. Compare what's actually included.
A low quote and a high quote can describe genuinely different products. Most of the frustration we hear about comes from people who compared numbers without comparing scope.
We publish our pricing so you know before you call. We charge a flat management fee rather than a percentage of your ad spend, so we have no reason to talk you into a bigger budget. The owner does the work. Our longest client relationship started in 2017.
None of that is loud. All of it is checkable.
If you want the cheapest option, it exists and it's easy to find. If you want work that holds up, that's a different conversation — and we're happy to have it.
Why is professional design more expensive than online alternatives?
Low-cost providers rely on templates and volume, which the price point requires. Custom work involves discovery, original design, revision, full file delivery, and clear ownership — all of which take time that templating eliminates.
Is cheap design ever the right choice?
Yes, for temporary needs, tests, and one-off materials. It becomes expensive when the work has to last, appear on signage or vehicles, or support a trademark.
How do I compare quotes from different providers?
Compare scope rather than price. Ask what's original versus templated, which files you receive, whether you own the source files, and who does the actual work.
What does referral-based growth indicate about an agency?
That existing clients recommend them without incentive. It's slower to build than advertising-driven growth and considerably harder to manufacture.
Why would an agency turn down work?
Because capacity is finite and quality depends on it. A shop that accepts everything is optimizing for volume, which affects what it can deliver on any individual project.
