Let's Make This Concrete

"Be consistent" is marketing advice so common it's become almost meaningless. Of course you should be consistent. But what does that actually mean when you're a small business owner running everything yourself? Let me make it concrete.

Visual Consistency

Every touchpoint where a potential customer encounters your brand should feel like it belongs to the same family. That means: the same logo (or approved logo variations) used across your website, social media, business cards, invoices, and signage. The same color palette — not "similar" colors, but the exact HEX codes from your brand guidelines. The same font family. The same photography style.

A simple test: screenshot your website header, your most recent Instagram post, and your business card. Set them side by side. Do they feel like one brand? If not, that's the first thing to fix.

Voice Consistency

Your brand voice is how your business sounds — and it should be recognizable whether someone is reading your website, your Instagram caption, your email newsletter, or your Google review response. If your website is formal and corporate but your Instagram is casual and funny, that dissonance makes customers feel uncertain about who they're actually dealing with. Pick a voice, define it clearly, and use it everywhere.

Frequency Consistency

Posting three times a week for two weeks and then going dark for a month is worse than posting once a week, every week. Audiences — and algorithms — respond to reliability. The exact frequency matters less than the reliability of it.

Consistency isn't glamorous. It doesn't produce dramatic results in week one. But it's the single most reliable predictor of which businesses build recognition, trust, and momentum over time.
