Not All Marketing Agencies Are Created Equal

There are a lot of marketing agencies out there. Some are excellent. Some are genuinely terrible. Learning to tell the difference before you sign a contract is a skill worth developing. I've heard enough stories from small business owners who spent thousands of dollars on agencies that delivered almost nothing — and I want to help you avoid that experience.

Red Flag #1: Guaranteed Rankings or Guaranteed Results

Any agency that guarantees specific Google rankings, specific follower counts, or specific revenue outcomes is overpromising. No ethical marketer can guarantee Google rankings — the algorithm belongs to Google, not the agency. Guarantees sound reassuring. They're usually a sign that an agency is saying whatever it takes to close the deal.

Red Flag #2: No Clear Explanation of What They'll Do

When you ask a prospective agency what they'll actually do for your business each month, you should get a specific, understandable answer. Not buzzwords. A reputable agency can explain their process in plain language. If it's all vague promises to "grow your digital presence," walk away.

Red Flag #3: Commission on Ad Spend

Agencies that charge a percentage of your ad spend have a built-in financial incentive to encourage you to spend more — not to optimize your results. A flat management fee is cleaner, more transparent, and more aligned with your interests.

Red Flag #4: No Contract or Vague Contract Terms

A professional agency works under a clear, written agreement that specifies exactly what services are being provided, how performance will be measured, the payment terms, and what happens if either party wants to end the relationship. An agency that resists putting things in writing — walk away.

Red Flag #5: They Don't Ask About Your Business

Before proposing a strategy or a price, a good agency asks a lot of questions. An agency that jumps straight to their pitch without understanding your business is going to give you a generic solution that may not fit your situation at all.

Red Flag #6: Poor Communication During the Sales Process

How an agency communicates before you sign is a preview of how they'll communicate after. If they're slow to respond, miss scheduled calls, or are unclear during the vetting stage — don't expect that to improve.
