I've written 107 Google reviews as a Local Guide, which means I've spent a lot of time looking at what real ones are shaped like.
Fake reviews have tells. Once you know them you can't unsee them — useful whether you're choosing a contractor or trying to understand why a competitor's profile looks the way it does.
The clearest signal. A real review mentions something particular — what they ordered, who helped them, what went wrong and got fixed, how long it took.
A fake one praises in general terms: professional, great service, highly recommend, exceeded expectations. Nothing that could only be written by someone who was actually there.
The reason is simple. Someone who wasn't there has nothing specific to say.
The most reliable indicator of an authentic review is specificity. Genuine reviewers mention particular details — items ordered, staff names, timelines — because they were present. Generic praise is the default output of someone who wasn't.
Fifteen five-star reviews inside a week, and near silence on either side.
Real reviews trickle in unevenly. A spike usually means a campaign — sometimes purchased, sometimes an incentive promotion, sometimes staff and family. All three distort.
Click the reviewer's name. A real person has a history — other reviews, other places, sometimes photos, spread across time.
An account with one review, no photo, and a generic name is not proof of anything, but a business whose positive reviews all come from such accounts is telling you something.
A local dentist with reviewers whose other reviews are all in other countries. Happens more than you'd think.
Several reviews using the same unusual construction, or all naming the business by its full legal name the way nobody speaks. Purchased reviews often come from one writer or one template.
A business with hundreds of reviews and not a single one below five stars is unusual. Real businesses have off days, difficult customers, and people who wanted something they don't offer.
A few threes and fours make a profile more credible, not less.
Some things look suspicious and aren't:
Short positive reviews. Plenty of real customers write four words. It's the default for a good-not-remarkable experience.
All five stars from a small business. A great business with thirty reviews might legitimately have thirty fives.
Reviews mentioning an employee by name. This gets flagged as a coached-review sign, and in my experience it's the opposite — naming someone is one of the strongest markers of a real experience, because a person made an impression.
Two things.
Your real reviews should look real. Steady over time, varied in length, mostly specific, with an occasional four star. If you've been running an incentive campaign, your profile may be sending exactly the wrong signal to an attentive reader.
Don't buy them. Beyond the policy and FTC problems, the pattern is detectable by any careful customer. You'd be paying to look less trustworthy to the people most likely to scrutinize you before spending real money.
How can you tell if a Google review is fake?
Look for specificity. Real reviews mention particular details — items, names, timelines. Also check for clusters of reviews posted together, reviewer accounts with no history, and repeated phrasing.
Are all short reviews fake?
No. Many genuine customers write only a sentence. Short length alone means nothing; it's generic language combined with other signals that matters.
Is a perfect five-star rating suspicious?
It can be at high volume. Hundreds of reviews with no rating below five is unusual, since real businesses accumulate occasional threes and fours.
How do I check a reviewer's credibility?
Click their name to see their review history. A varied history across places and time suggests a real person; a single review from a blank account is weak evidence either way.
Does mentioning an employee by name suggest a coached review?
Usually the opposite. Naming a specific person is one of the stronger indicators of a genuine experience, because someone made an impression worth recording.
Should I report reviews I think are fake on a competitor's profile?
Reporting exists for policy violations. Using it against competitors on suspicion is a poor use of your time and creates its own risks.
