Let me tell you something most brand strategists won't: you don't need a six-figure engagement to develop a solid brand strategy. What you need is clarity, honesty, and a willingness to do the thinking that most business owners skip.
Not what you sell. Why you exist. Your why isn't about making money — it's about the deeper purpose behind what you do. For me, it's about making sure small businesses have access to the kind of strategic creative support that helps them compete, grow, and serve their communities. That purpose shapes everything — how I talk about my work, who I choose to work with, what I'm willing to do for a client who's struggling.
Most businesses try to appeal to everyone and end up connecting with no one. Get specific. What industry are they in? What keeps them up at night? What have they tried before that didn't work? What do they value in a business relationship? The more precisely you can answer these questions, the more directly your brand will speak to the people you most want to serve.
You need to understand the competitive landscape clearly: Who are the other players your ideal customer is considering? What do they do well? Where do they fall short? Where is the gap you can own? Brand differentiation isn't about being different for its own sake — it's about being meaningfully different in a way that matters to your specific audience.
Positioning captures the unique space you occupy in your market. You need to be able to clearly articulate why someone should choose you over every other available option. If you can't answer that question confidently, your potential customers can't either — and that uncertainty costs you business every single day.
Define three to five words that describe your brand's personality. Then capture what your brand sounds like — and what it doesn't sound like. This becomes the filter for all of your content going forward.
With your positioning and voice defined, build your core messaging: your tagline, your elevator pitch, your website headline, and your key value statements. These become the foundation everything else is built on.
Document your brand strategy. A clear, concise document that captures your why, your audience, your positioning, your voice, and your core messaging is enough to align everyone who touches your brand. This document becomes your brand north star — when you're making a decision about a new marketing campaign or a new hire, you come back to it.
