This is one of the most common questions I get from business owners starting a web project. And the honest answer is: it depends. But "it depends" is only a cop-out if I don't explain what it depends on. So let me walk you through the real factors that determine how long a website takes to build.
If someone is quoting you a fully built, professionally designed website in less than two weeks, ask a lot of questions. Fast and good rarely go together in web design.
Content is almost always the bottleneck. A designer cannot finalize a layout without knowing what goes in it. If you don't have your copy ready, your photography lined up, and your key messages decided, your project will stall. This is why I always recommend either preparing your content before the project starts, or including professional copywriting in the scope of work.
The more responsive you are with feedback, the faster the project moves. When a designer delivers a draft and waits two weeks for a response, the project doubles in length.
You start with a five-page site and by week three you're asking about an online store and a podcast page. Each addition pushes the timeline. Define your scope clearly at the start.
Launch day isn't the end — it's the beginning of the next phase. A website requires ongoing maintenance: software updates, content updates, performance monitoring, and SEO maintenance. A site that isn't maintained is a liability, not an asset.
