Google publishes content policies governing reviews. Almost no business owner has read them, and a surprising number are violating them without knowing.
Here's the working version — what's prohibited, what it means for you, and where the common mistakes are.
Reviews are supposed to reflect genuine firsthand experience.
Every specific rule descends from that. When you're unsure whether something's allowed, ask whether it moves a review further from an honest independent account. If it does, it's probably prohibited.
Google's review policies all descend from one principle: reviews should reflect genuine, independent firsthand experience. Practices that compromise that independence — incentives, filtering, connected accounts — are prohibited regardless of intent.
Reviews that don't reflect a real experience. Buying reviews, writing your own, having staff or family post, review exchanges with other businesses.
Anything of value in exchange for a review — discounts, free items, contest entries, loyalty points. Applies even when you don't request a positive rating.
Screening for satisfaction before deciding who to ask. Surveying customers and only routing happy ones to Google is the textbook version, but so is only handing the QR code to people who seemed pleased.
Reviews from anyone with a stake in the business — owners, staff, family, vendors. Also reviews of competitors, in either direction.
Reviews about something other than the customer experience. Political commentary, complaints about a different location, unrelated grievances.
Harassment, hate speech, personal information, explicit material, impersonation.
Not by buying reviews. Most local businesses would never. They get caught on these:
The sign by the register. Ten percent off for a review. Extremely common, plainly a violation, usually posted with no idea.
The lobby tablet. Multiple reviews from one device and location is a detectable pattern.
Asking staff to “help out.” Feels like team spirit. It's a conflict of interest.
Asking only the pleased customers. Informal gating, and functionally the same as the formal kind.
The launch push. Contacting every past customer at once creates a spike that looks like a campaign, because it is one.
Rarely a warning. Usually one of:
The invisibility is the problem. A business can violate policy for years, lose reviews quietly, and conclude the system is broken rather than that it's responding.
That's a substantial toolkit. It's enough.
These rules aren't arbitrary friction. The entire value of a review system rests on reviews being independent — and that value accrues to you as much as to customers.
If reviews could be bought, review counts would mean nothing, and the reputation you built over years would be worth exactly what a competitor's credit card could buy.
The rules protect the businesses that follow them.
What are Google's review policies?
Rules requiring reviews to reflect genuine firsthand experience. They prohibit fake engagement, incentivized reviews, review gating, conflicts of interest, off-topic content, and harassment.
What's the most common violation by small businesses?
Offering an incentive — typically a discount or contest entry in exchange for a review. It's widespread, usually unintentional, and a clear violation.
Can I ask my employees to leave reviews?
No. Employees have a stake in the business, which makes it a conflict of interest.
Is asking only satisfied customers against the rules?
Yes. Selecting for likely-positive reviewers is review gating, whether it's a formal survey or an informal judgment call.
How will I know if I've violated a policy?
Usually you won't be told. Reviews are typically removed without notification, so a dropping review count may be the only signal.
Can I get reviews reinstated after removal?
Sometimes, through Business Profile support, if you can demonstrate they were legitimate. It's inconsistent and worth avoiding the situation instead.
This is general information, not legal advice. Google's policies change — check their current documentation for specifics.
