A one-star review appears from a name you don't recognize, describing an experience that never happened.
It's one of the more genuinely upsetting things that can happen to a small business, partly because it feels like an attack and partly because it feels like there's nothing you can do.
There is. It just isn't fast, and the most important part happens in the first ten minutes — which is when most owners make it worse.
Whatever you post is permanent, public, and read by people deciding whether to hire you.
An owner who responds to a bad review with hostility hands the reviewer credibility. Readers can't verify the review, but they can absolutely evaluate your reply, and a defensive one persuades them the reviewer had a point.
Write the angry version if you need to. Don't publish it.
The response to a negative review is read by more prospective customers than the review itself and is fully within your control. A defensive or hostile reply damages credibility more than the original review does.
Before escalating, rule out the ordinary explanations. Genuine reviews sometimes look fabricated to an owner who was proud of that job.
That last one happens constantly, especially with common business names, and it's often resolvable with a polite public reply noting the mix-up.
Google removes reviews that violate policy, not reviews that are unfair. That distinction is the whole game.
Likely removable:
Not removable:
A negative review from an actual customer is not going anywhere, and shouldn't. Your recourse there is your reply.
Flag the review through your Business Profile, selecting the specific policy it violates. Be precise — “this person was never a customer, we have no record of this service on this date” works better than “this is fake.”
Wait. Review takes days, sometimes longer.
Escalate if needed. If the flag is rejected and you're confident, Google Business Profile support can escalate. Document everything: dates, records showing no such transaction, anything establishing the reviewer was never a customer.
Be persistent but realistic. Some reviews that clearly violate policy don't get removed. It's frustrating and it's the system as it exists.
Reports citing a specific policy violation with supporting detail are more likely to succeed than general assertions that a review is false. Explain which policy applies and what evidence supports it.
Removal isn't guaranteed, so write a reply on the assumption it stays up forever.
Keep it short, factual, and unemotional. Something like:
“We don't have a record of a customer by this name and we're unable to locate this transaction. If we've made an error, please contact us directly at [phone] — we'd genuinely like to resolve it.”
That reply does three things. It states your position without accusation, it demonstrates willingness to fix real problems, and it lets any reasonable reader draw their own conclusion.
Don't say “this review is fake.” Say you have no record. Let the reader do the arithmetic.
Here's the uncomfortable part: your best protection is having enough real reviews that one bad one doesn't matter.
A fake one-star review against twelve reviews is a crisis. Against two hundred, it's noise — and a lone outlier surrounded by detailed positive reviews reads as suspicious to anyone paying attention.
Businesses that panic over a single fake review are usually businesses with too few real ones. That's the fixable problem, and the time to fix it is before anything happens.
Can I get a fake Google review removed?
Sometimes. Google removes reviews that violate its policies — non-customers, wrong business, harassment, conflicts of interest. Reviews that are merely negative or unfair are not removed.
How do I report a fake review?
Flag it through your Business Profile, selecting the specific policy violated and explaining precisely why. Escalate through support with documentation if the flag is rejected.
How long does removal take?
Typically several days, sometimes considerably longer, and there's no guarantee of removal.
Should I respond to a fake review?
Yes, calmly and factually. Write it assuming it stays visible permanently. State that you have no record of the transaction and invite direct contact.
Can I sue over a fake review?
Defamation claims are possible but difficult, expensive, and frequently generate more attention than the review did. Consult an attorney before considering it.
What if a competitor is leaving fake reviews?
That's a conflict of interest and a clear policy violation. Document the pattern and report each instance with that specific reasoning.
This is general information, not legal advice.
