Google Reviews

It's a Relative Game, Not an Absolute One

The honest answer is: it depends. But it only depends on your specific competitive context — and I'll explain exactly what to look at. The first thing I look at when assessing a client's review situation isn't their own review count — it's their competitors' review counts.

Search your primary service keywords in Google right now. Look at the businesses appearing in the local map pack. How many reviews do they have? What's their average rating? That's your baseline. The number that matters isn't a universal benchmark — it's what you need to be competitive in your specific local market.

Is a 4.5 Star Rating Better Than 5 Stars?

Counterintuitively, a perfect 5.0 rating can sometimes work against you — because it looks too perfect. Consumers know that real businesses occasionally have an off day. A business with 200 reviews and a 4.7 rating can appear more credible than one with 20 reviews and a perfect 5.0.

The sweet spot most research points to is between 4.5 and 4.9. What matters more than a perfect rating is volume — a business with 150 reviews and a 4.7 rating will almost always outperform one with 10 reviews and a 5.0 in terms of customer trust and conversion.

Why Recency Matters as Much as Volume

A steady stream of new reviews over time performs better than a burst of reviews followed by nothing. Getting 50 reviews in a month and then nothing for a year is less effective than consistently earning 3–5 reviews per month over time. This is why review generation needs to be an ongoing habit, not a one-time push.

Setting a Realistic Goal

Identify your top three local competitors and note their review counts. Set a goal to match or exceed the median within 12 months. Build a consistent review-request process that generates 3–5 new reviews per month. Respond to every review — positive and negative.
