The Future of Web Design and 4 Things You Need to Consider, Now.

When we think of the future and web design, several things come to mind:

  • Will it be mobile friendly
  • Will it look good
  • Will it load properly and fast
  • Will it produce a positive experience
  • Will it appear credible
  • Will it have an obvious Call to Action (CTA)

Good news, you won't need to worry about any of it. Jpetrous Creative Services (JpCS) has your back. And you can contact us today to begin your free consultation.

But, just in case you want to dive into the realm of Web Design, or continue managing your own page for yourself or your business here are our top 4 things that you need to consider for your web based projects. And yes, everything is sourced so you can dig deeper into that rabbit hole called curiosity.

39% of people will stop engaging with a website if images won’t load or take too long to load

What does this mean. Simple. If your site depends on visuals to tell a story or relay information and they do not load, that story isn't being told, is it. Even if your site does not rely on imagery to tell a story, images of any kind still have a huge impact on customer retention.

Several factors can result in images not loading as well. So, consider checking the file sizes of your images, or take it another step further and consider the file type. In regards to file formats, WEBP is s a modern image format that provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. Using WebP, webmasters and web developers can create smaller, richer images that make the webpage faster.

We currently reside in a "I need it now" or "instant satisfaction" generation and time. Our expectations of the web are a reflection of this as well. 47% of users expect a maximum of 2 seconds loading time for an average website. Pretty crazy, to consider. And, this particular loading speed is achievable with a WEBP image format or smaller file sizes. Sure, we may want to keep hi-resolution imagery on our pages, but at what cost. The customer? A potential conversion? I don't think so.

Keeping visitors on your page can be make or break when it comes to broken images, among other factors. Don't push your customers away by using the wrong image types, poor loading speeds or unlinked imagery.

Bonus Content just for you:

Now, you won't have to worry about anyone saying your images won't load or your page is too slow. You are so welcome.

38% of people will stop engaging with a website if the content/layout is unattractive

When was the last time your website was updated? Fingers crossed you don't saying the late 90's or early 00's. In fact If given 15 minutes to consume content, two-thirds of people would rather read something beautifully designed than something plain, long and boring.

We all have fallen victim to this one in particular. "This page looks out of date, are they even open?" Consider what your customers may be saying about your page at first glance or even new customers and this potential first impression. First impressions are 94% design-related by the way. This isn't just for the page overall, it could also be about a particular experience on the page as well. AKA the top navigation bar being overloaded with buttons or a nearly endless scroll of what appears to be a novel written in latin by a philosopher named Mediocrates.

A current, clean, and up to date site that is future proof is essential. With a well laid out page, that is visually appealing or attractive that tells a proper story for your customers from top to bottom can really drive a strong conversion. Not to mention if they can achieve what they are looking for in 3 clicks or less.

In fact, were you aware that 57% of internet users say they won’t recommend a business with a poorly designed website on mobile? Considering that over 50% of web browsing takes place on a mobile device today (an rising), this should further encourage you to consider getting up to date because 75% of consumers admit to making judgements on a company’s credibility based on the company’s website design. Time to pick up the old saying, the customer is always right but add a new spin.. the customer is always judging your website.

85% of adults think that a company’s website when viewed on a mobile device should be as good or better than its desktop website

This further supports the previous claim and the importance of a mobile friendly or fully responsive web site. But, to further emphasize this, 88% of online consumers are less likely to return to a site after a bad experience. Have you ever tried to view a webpage that was intended for a computer, but had to look at it on your phone? Pretty irritating, right? Having to pinch the screen to zoom in and then zoom back out to see where you are and move around the page just to see what else is there, only to find out that you can't see the images or read anything and then have to pinch the screen again and start all over again? Yeah. We know, it sucks.

Many designers now would say that you need to design with mobile in mind first, and then work backwards to web. Simply because 8 in 10 customers would stop engaging with content that doesn’t display well on their device. You can also test it for yourself. Look around the office or your living room and ask what others are looking at. Are they on the web? How does the page look? Does it appear to be a positive experience? Better yet, how are you reading this blog post right now?

Truthfully speaking, with the current number of mobile viewers today found in the younger demographics such as GenZ and Millennials, designing with a mobile first practice is a great way to stay current, on trend, and ahead of the curve. Meaning, you'll be hip or cool or whatever.

This experience should be mindful of the customer and how they will interact with all of the major and minor functionalities on your page as well. In many cases, the mobile version should be a simplified version what the web version would look like.

70% of small business websites lack a Call to Action (CTA) on their homepage

Having a strong Call to Action or CTA is essential. In case you did not know, a CTA is a button that is hyperlinked to another page, product or service. It not only tells the viewer how and where to do something, it is also a proper display of service. To some, it is also a reminder saying, "we're still here, and we can still help!"

Have you ever scrolled across a page that did not have a CTA on it? They may be far and few in between, but it may be a great way to fill the void the time you are in between more important things to do. Typically, a primary CTA should be bold, and easy to see. A secondary CTA should be visible, but not steal the spotlight. If your primary is solid, then you secondary should be outlined.

Depending on the placement or where your viewer is located on the page, you may also want to consider eye-tracking methods such as Z or F and place CTAs in the appropriate locations that draw the eye.

According to several marketing minds, as a business owner, you should make sure that if you have a particular service in mind to keep pushing it throughout the page in supporting blocks or sections. This is a direct display of confidence to the consumer, and if you convince them to move forward with what you have to offer, they don't have to scroll way up or down to find the nearest CTA.
